All Homework is intended as a follow up to what is being taught in class. Some students will pick up skills quickly, others need more practice and assistance. Check your child's homework daily and assist them, but do not do it for them. If you find that it is too difficult for your child, please let me know. If your child is having difficulties, there may be others who are also having trouble, and the homework my need to be modified.
Reading Log - Daily
In order for students to get proficient at reading, students need to practice decoding books at their reading level. So everyday your child will be taking home a leveled book. When your child takes home their daily book please take the time to listen to him/her read. If your child gets stuck while reading, suggest one of the strategies that are listed on the yellow sheet in their envelope. Ultimately we want your child to become independent problem solvers and be able to self correct themselves as they read. In addition, students need to understand what they read. So after your child reads to you, discuss what was in the book. Some books will be fiction (made up) and others will be non-fiction (informational).
Learned words practice - Three times a week
To meet the standards for reading and writing, students need to be able to read and write non-decodable words. Words that are not pronounced the normal way. For example: The word "to", the "o" makes neither the short or long sound that kids are used to, and it doesn't have a double oo that normally makes that sound. Students just need to memorize these words, so every week we practice 4 words, 2 at the beginning of the week and 2 at the middle of the week. Both time students are asked to practice writing these words, then read a sentence with these words. Friday is a review day with all 4 words.
Learned word sentences- Twice a week
The best way to learn something is to use it. So the day following the Learn word practice, we will use the words in a sentence. You may help your child to come up with the sentence, but encourage your child to sound out the words and write independently. Also encourage your child to use their skill table for previously learned words. Remind your child to start the sentence with a capital letter and put a period or question mark at the end. Also, remind your child to capitalize names and places, and put commas when listing things. These are all part of the Common Core Language Standard that your child will be learning.
Skill Tablet - Twice a week
Every week students learn two new phonograms. Groups of letters that often appear together, like ch, ing, ee. Students learn the sound these combination of letters make and rule of when they are used. When the skill tablet is assigned discuss the phonogram and the rule, and practice reading some words that have this phonograms, as well as practice reading words with past phonograms. We circle the phonogram parts to help students start recognizing the in words. Again there are sentences for your child to practice reading and the two new learned words being taught. Please initial the page you practice with your child, so I know it was reviewed and practiced. This tablet will also teach you a thing or two, for example do you know a word should be spelled with a c or k.
Math - Twice a week, but later it will be daily.
Math homework will be comprised of several different types of homework as we convert to Common Core Standards.
Math Home Links are part of our Every Day Math series, it is often meant to be completed with parent assistance.
Number Stories are sent home to develop students awareness of how math is applied to real word situations and problems.
Number Bonds help kids to add and subtract. Common Core requires students to know how to combine and break up numbers quickly
and efficiently.
More information about math homework will be posted next quarter.
